Deal Summary

In early 2026, Ceniarth provided a $1m senior unsecured loan facility to Working Capital for Community Needs (WCCN), a U.S. nonprofit that has channelled impact-first capital to microfinance institutions, producer cooperatives and social enterprises across Latin America since 1984. Structured as a five-year facility, this is WCCN’s first institutional debt - a milestone that marks the organisation’s transition from its four-decade grassroots retail investor model toward a more diversified and sustainable funding base.

Beneficiary Impact

WCCN’s 26 partner MFIs serve low-income microentrepreneurs, smallholder farmers and indigenous communities across ten countries in Central and South America. In 2024, WCCN reached 13,854 borrowers directly, of whom 65% were women, 57% lived in rural areas and 52% had no prior access to financial services - a depth of inclusion that few comparably-sized lenders match.

For every $1m deployed, WCCN supports approximately 1,000 low-income microentrepreneurs gaining access to credit, 657 women and 572 rural community members. Impact extends well beyond credit: 83% of WCCN’s partners also provide non-financial services such as financial literacy training, health programs and climate resilience support, reaching over 334,000 people annually. In 2025, WCCN launched a proprietary 28-indicator Impact Scorecard to systematically assess partner-level social performance and strengthen impact measurement over time.

Intermediary Impact

WCCN is one of the few international lenders consistently willing to extend multi-year facilities to Tier 3 MFIs - the smallest, least commercially viable institutions - in the most underserved markets of Central America. Its four-decade presence in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador gives it local relationships and deal flow that larger microfinance lenders cannot easily replicate. WCCN is often the first international lender of record to smaller Tier 3 institutions, helping them build governance, financial reporting and portfolio management standards that open the door to other funders over time. 81% of WCCN’s partners report they would not have obtained similar financing elsewhere.

Capital Additionality

Ceniarth’s facility is WCCN’s first institutional debt and its largest single credit line. WCCN has sustained its mission for 40 years through a grassroots retail investor model that has produced strong and consistent results. This loyal retail lender base will serve as an essential backbone as WCCN seeks more institutional impact-first capital to expand the loan book. By providing this anchor facility, Ceniarth enables WCCN to grow its lending to the underserved communities that traditional lenders consistently overlook.
